How I Vote

As an Independent MP in Federal Parliament my focus is on you – the community. I serve our community, not a political party or political leader and so every vote and policy position I take has the best interests of Mackellar, and our nation, at heart. This is very different from MPs in the major parties who are told how to vote and often receive a message telling them how to vote on every issue

The way I vote will always be informed by evidence, and guided by the values and wishes of our community. I promise to be transparent on my voting record and you can see how I have voted in every parliamentary division here

Below is a summary of how I voted on major legislation and why. If you'd like to know more details, please contact me at [email protected]

How I voted

Why

Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Amendment (Expanding the Water Trigger) Bill 2023

Expanding the existing ‘water trigger’ means all proposed unconventional gas (fracking) projects are assessed for their impacts on critical water resources so future projects in areas like the Beetaloo basin in the Northern Territory will now have to undertake studies of the likely impact on aquifers and rivers and get federal approval.

I voted for this bill which included my “water trigger” to protect aquifers from all gas fracking. The new nature Market repair bill will encourage private sector investment in conservation.

Sea Dumping Amendment 2023

I campaigned against this bill because it allows gas companies to store CO2 they produce in offshore carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects. It’s greenwashing and will allow an expansion of gas.
